“We’re living in strange times; environmental disasters, mostly man made, have taken hold of our landscape over the last 6 months and now a global pandemic is stealthily spreading. Our leaders seem only guided by markets for their purpose and the ‘Tragedy of the Commons’ is being playing out on a global scale. So what is the point of painting abstract paintings; locked away in the studio, back turned to the world, in a tussle that has no relevance, no purpose. If it’s not just about beauty, or the construction of an object, and attempting to claim truth and meaning seems just presumptuous then we are left with a ‘what then?’ I don’t know.” - TONY MIGHELL
Tony Mighell studied in various Melbourne art schools in the seventies including the Victoria College of the Arts then journeyed to the New York Studio School.
The studio assistant for the Australian modernist Roger Kemp, Mighell was involved in the infamous Melbourne group of artists in the early eighties, Roar Studios.
He coordinated the painting studio at the art school in Launceston Tasmania working alongside Australian artists like Bea Maddock.
Moving to Sydney in 1994 after a number of exhibitions in Melbourne, Mighell developed a sought after reputation installing art exhibitions which led to him being the Head of Installation at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney.
Whilst always maintaining his art practice, Mighell moved on from the MCA in 2015 and from then on has concentrated on his painting and drawing.
“All I can do is keep going, striving after a form that somehow answers a question you don’t know the words for, keep going till some connection occurs which might look off kilter, slightly ugly, probably closer to failure than success and occasionally holds mystery and openness. “
In this exhibition, (+) Plus, Tony has returned to using oil paint and with the pros and cons of limitless time in the studio investigates the intentional extension of mark making and the tenuous borders between a line and a plane or space.
